How Much Mulch Should I Use?

1 Cubic Yard = 27 Cubic Feet

Measuring the amount of mulch you need for a planting bed is easy if you use our mulch calculator.

So for example to obtain a mulch amount estimate for a planting bed shown in the picture below and using a depth of 2"  you will need 0.62 cubic yards of mulch to cover this planting bed.

Estimating How Much Mulch You'll Need

The two most common areas to measure for mulch are planting beds and around trees.

The amount of mulch you need must be calculated in terms of cubic yards.

Imagine a box that has the dimensions where the length, width and height are all 3 feet.  This is a cubic yard (see picture).

When using our mulch calculator you simply enter the length and width of the area to be mulched in feet and then add the inches of depth you want. The calculator will then estimate how much mulch you'll need.

Note: Our minimum order is 1 cubic yard. It is recommended to use 2" to 4" in depth.

One Cubic Yard Covers:

324 sq feet @ 1″ deep

162 sq feet @ 2″ deep

108 sq feet @ 3″ deep

81 sq feet @ 4″ deep

2″ to 4" recommended annually

One cubic yard of mulch measures:

3ft x 3ft x 3ft pile

13.5 bags of 2 cu. ft. bagged mulch

18 bags of 1.5 cu. ft. bagged mulch

To determine how many cubic yards you would need for under a tree, simply measure the distance from the center of the tree to the edge of the tree's canopy.

The extent of a tree's canopy is also referred to as the tree's dripline.

To determine how many cubic yards of mulch you would need under a tree, simply measure the distance from the center of the tree's trunk to the edge of the tree's canopy.

This measurement is called the radius of the circle. Our example shows a 4 ft radius.
